10. → Your Vehicle
A safe driver must operate a safe vehicle. Beyond the skills and knowledge required to drive, every vehicle owner has legal responsibilities to ensure their car is properly titled, registered, insured, and equipped for safe operation on public roads. Meeting these requirements is not just about following the law; it is a fundamental part of preventing equipment failure that could lead to a crash.
To legally operate a vehicle in Iowa, it must be properly titled, registered, and insured. Furthermore, the vehicle must be maintained in good working order and have all the safety equipment required by state law. While Iowa does not have a program of mandatory periodic inspections, law enforcement can stop and cite a driver for operating an unsafe vehicle at any time.
Title, Registration, and Insurance
These three components are the legal foundation of vehicle ownership and operation.
Vehicle Title vs. Registration
- A Certificate of Title is a legal document that proves ownership of a vehicle. You must apply for a title within 30 days of purchasing a vehicle. The title is used to transfer ownership when the vehicle is sold.
- Vehicle Registration is the process of officially registering your vehicle with the state, which allows it to be driven on public roads. Registration must be renewed annually. Upon registration, you receive license plates and a registration receipt, which must be kept in the vehicle or carried in electronic format.
License Plates
Iowa requires two license plates, one for the front and one for the rear of the vehicle. Both plates must be securely fastened in a horizontal position, kept clean, and be clearly legible at all times. Plate frames should not cover any part of the numbers, letters, or the name of the state.
