Even the most careful drivers can face unexpected emergencies, from a sudden vehicle malfunction to being involved in a collision. Knowing the correct procedures to follow in these high-stress situations is a critical part of being a responsible driver. This knowledge is not only essential for personal safety and for passing the driver’s exam, but it also ensures a driver meets their legal obligations and can manage a difficult event calmly and effectively.
Vehicle Malfunctions
A sudden mechanical failure can be frightening, but knowing how to react can prevent a loss of control and a potential crash. The key is to remain calm and respond with smooth, deliberate actions.
Tire Blowout
A tire blowout is a rapid loss of air pressure that can cause the vehicle to pull sharply to one side.
- Grip the Steering Wheel Firmly: Hold the wheel with both hands to maintain control against the pull.
- Do Not Slam on the Brakes: Sudden braking can cause the vehicle to spin.
- Ease Off the Accelerator: Allow the vehicle to slow down gradually on its own.
- Find a Safe Place to Pull Over: Once the vehicle has slowed to a manageable speed, steer gently to the side of the road, away from traffic.
- Activate Hazard Lights: Turn on your emergency flashers to alert other drivers.
