7. → Safe Driving Practice
Simply knowing the traffic laws is not enough to be a safe driver; one must also adopt a proactive mindset and a set of defensive habits. Safe driving practices are about anticipating potential hazards, managing the space around the vehicle, and making sound decisions in challenging conditions. Mastering these skills is not only vital for passing the driving exam but is the most effective way to prevent collisions and ensure the safety of everyone on the road.
Principles of Defensive Driving
Defensive driving is a strategy that aims to reduce risk by assuming other road users may make mistakes. It involves actively looking for potential dangers and being prepared to act before a situation becomes an emergency.
Scanning
Effective scanning means continuously moving one’s eyes to keep track of the entire traffic scene. A defensive driver avoids staring at the road directly in front of the vehicle. Instead, they look 10 to 15 seconds ahead, which is about one city block or a quarter-mile on the highway. This allows them to see developing problems early. Scanning also involves regularly checking rearview and side mirrors every few seconds to be aware of vehicles approaching from behind or lingering in blind spots.
Space Cushions
A space cushion is the safe area of open space maintained around a vehicle. This buffer provides the time and distance needed to react to sudden stops or swerving from other drivers. The most important part of a space cushion is the following distance. A driver should use the 3- to 4-second rule to maintain a safe following distance. To measure this, a driver watches the vehicle ahead pass a fixed object, like a sign or an overpass, and then counts the seconds it takes for their own vehicle to reach that same object. In ideal conditions, the count should be at least three seconds. This distance must be increased in adverse conditions such as rain, snow, or when following large trucks or motorcycles.
