Chapter 10: Your Vehicle

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

A driver’s license authorizes a person to drive, but the vehicle itself must also be legally compliant and mechanically sound. Ensuring your car has the proper documentation, insurance, and safety equipment is a legal requirement and a cornerstone of responsible ownership. A vehicle in poor condition can fail unexpectedly, causing a crash, while a lack of proper insurance or registration can lead to significant legal and financial penalties.

Title, Registration, and Insurance

Every vehicle on the road must have proper legal documentation. These documents prove ownership and grant permission for the vehicle to be operated on public highways.

  • Vehicle Title: The title is a legal document that proves ownership of a vehicle. It is issued by the state and contains information like the vehicle identification number (VIN), the owner’s name and address, and any liens from lenders. You must have the title to sell the vehicle.
  • Vehicle Registration: Registration is the process of officially recording a vehicle with the state’s Department of Finance and Administration (DFA). A valid registration, proven by a registration card and license plates with current decals, is required to operate a vehicle on public roads. Registration must be renewed annually in Arkansas.
  • License Plates: Arkansas requires vehicles to have a license plate displayed on the rear, securely fastened and clearly visible. The plate must be kept clean and illuminated at night so it is legible from 50 feet away.

Minimum Liability Insurance

Arkansas law requires all drivers to carry liability insurance to cover costs if they are at fault in a crash. Driving without insurance is illegal and carries severe penalties.
