Texas Speed Limits

Texas enforces a Basic Speed Law, meaning you must always drive at a speed that is safe for current conditions, even if it is lower than the posted limit. Default maximum speeds include 30 mph in business/residential areas, 75 mph on highways, and 15-25 mph in active school zones, with some interstate stretches allowing 85 mph.

It is illegal to drive so slowly that you block the normal flow of traffic. Special conditions always require reduced speed, such as when approaching railroad crossings, blind intersections, or emergency vehicles. Speeding fines are doubled in construction zones, which are marked with orange signs.
