California Driver’s License Rules
The California DMV issues different license classes based on the vehicle you drive. The most common is the Class C license for standard cars and light trucks. A separate Class M1 or M2 license is required to operate a motorcycle or moped.
For drivers under 18, California uses a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program. It begins with a learner’s permit at 15 ½, requires a provisional license at 16 with driving restrictions, and culminates in a full, unrestricted license at age 18.
Adults (18 and older) applying for a license must provide proof of identity, residency, and their Social Security number. They must then pass vision and written knowledge tests to receive an instruction permit.
With the permit, an adult can drive with any licensed driver in the car. After practicing, they must schedule and pass a behind-the-wheel driving test to receive their permanent driver’s license.
