Getting Your Alabama License
In Alabama, the most common license is the Class D, for passenger cars and light trucks under 26,000 pounds. If you want to ride a motorcycle, you’ll need a Class M license.
Teens can get a Learner’s Permit at 15 and then an Intermediate License at 16, which comes with restrictions like no driving between midnight and 6 a.m. At 17, a teen can get a full license if they’ve held their intermediate one for at least six months with no violations.
To get your first license as an adult, you’ll need to show proof of identity, legal presence, and Alabama residency. You’ll then have to pass a vision screening, a written knowledge test, and a road test to prove you can drive safely. Remember, your Alabama license is valid for four years.
