Chapter 10: Your Vehicle

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

A driver’s skill and knowledge are only part of the safety equation; the vehicle itself must be legally registered, insured, and properly equipped to be operated on public roads. Understanding these requirements is essential for passing the driver’s license exam, as questions about insurance and equipment are common. More importantly, maintaining a legally compliant and safe vehicle is a fundamental responsibility that prevents accidents and protects you from significant legal and financial penalties.

Title, Registration, and Insurance

Before a vehicle can be driven on Florida roads, it must be properly titled, registered, and insured. These three components are legally required and serve distinct purposes.

  • Vehicle Title: A Certificate of Title is a legal document that proves ownership of a vehicle. When you buy a vehicle, you must obtain the title from the seller and apply for a new title in your name. You cannot get a license plate until you have a title proving you own the vehicle.
  • Vehicle Registration: Registration is the process of officially recording the vehicle with the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) department. Upon registration, you receive a license plate and a registration certificate, which must be kept in the vehicle at all times. New Florida residents must register their vehicles within 10 days of beginning employment or enrolling children in a public school.
  • License Plates: A current license plate must be displayed on the rear of the vehicle. Registrations must be renewed annually or biennially, and expire at midnight on the birthday of the first owner listed on the registration.

Florida Insurance Requirements

Florida operates under a “No-Fault” insurance system. This means that, regardless of who is at fault in a crash, your own insurance policy provides initial coverage for your injuries. All drivers must carry proof of insurance in their vehicle at all times.
