Chapter 9: Emergencies & Legal Responsibilities

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

A driver’s skill is truly tested not in ideal conditions, but when something unexpected happens. Knowing how to react to a vehicle malfunction, a collision, or a traffic stop is crucial for safety and legal compliance. This knowledge is a key part of the driver’s license exam because it demonstrates a driver’s ability to handle stress, maintain control, and follow the law when it matters most.

Vehicle Malfunctions

Panic is the enemy during a vehicle emergency. The correct response often involves smooth, deliberate actions, not sudden, jerky movements. Understanding the proper procedure for common malfunctions can turn a potential catastrophe into a manageable situation.

A diagram shows the rear view of a vehicle with a driver using hand signals to indicate a left turn, a right turn, and a stop or slow down.

Tire Blowout

A sudden loss of air pressure in a tire will cause the vehicle to pull sharply in the direction of the flat.

  1. Do not slam on the brakes. This is the most critical step. Braking will worsen the swerve and can cause a complete loss of control.
  2. Grip the steering wheel firmly with both hands to counteract the pull.
  3. Take your foot off the accelerator and allow the vehicle to slow down gradually.
  4. Steer the car to a safe place off the roadway, such as the shoulder.
  5. Activate your hazard lights and only apply the brakes gently once the vehicle has slowed to a safe speed.
