The Basic Speed Law
The Basic Speed Law requires you to always drive at a speed that is “reasonable and prudent” for the current road, weather, and traffic conditions. This means the posted speed limit is not always safe, and you must slow down when necessary to avoid a collision.
You must reduce your speed for hazards like intersections, curves, hill crests, narrow roads, and poor conditions like rain, fog, or heavy traffic. Your primary duty is to operate your vehicle safely, regardless of the posted limit.
