The process at the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) can seem complicated, but breaking it down into a checklist makes it manageable. Here is exactly what you need to do to get on the road legally.
1. The Class E Learner’s License
Your journey begins at age 15. Before you can take the written test, you must complete a mandatory education course.
- Required Course (Teens): Applicants 15–17 must complete the 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course.
- Required Course (Adults): Applicants 18+ must complete the 4-hour Traffic Law & Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course.
- The Exam: The knowledge test consists of 50 questions on road rules and signs.
- Passing Score: You must answer at least 40 questions correctly (80%) to pass.
- Vision Test: You must pass a vision screening with 20/40 acuity or better.
2. Required Documents Checklist
Florida follows Real ID standards. You must bring original documents (no photocopies) to the service center.
- Proof of Identity: (e.g., U.S. Birth Certificate or valid Passport).
- Social Security Number: (e.g., Social Security Card or W-2 form).
- Residential Address: Two documents showing your Florida address (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement, or bank statement).
- Parental Consent: If under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the application (Form 71142).
3. Rules for Drivers Under 18
Florida’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws ensure you gain experience safely.
- Holding Period: You must hold your learner’s license for 12 months (or until you turn 18) with no moving violations.
- Practice Hours: You must log 50 hours of driving, with at least 10 hours at night.
