Towing a trailer dramatically changes a vehicle’s handling, acceleration, and braking capabilities. Understanding the specific equipment, loading principles, and driving techniques required is not just for passing the driver’s exam, but is a critical safety responsibility. A poorly loaded or improperly driven trailer can lead to dangerous swaying, loss of control, and serious collisions, making this knowledge essential for protecting yourself and others on the road.
Equipment and Loading
Before towing, a driver must ensure the vehicle and trailer are properly equipped and the load is balanced and secure. This pre-trip inspection is the most important step in preventing on-road emergencies.
Required Equipment
- Hitch Assembly: The hitch connects the trailer to the tow vehicle. It consists of a receiver on the vehicle, a ball mount that slides into the receiver, and a hitch ball on which the trailer coupler rests. The hitch ball and ball mount must be rated for a weight equal to or greater than the gross weight of the trailer.
- Safety Chains: Every trailer must be connected to the tow vehicle with two strong safety chains. These chains are a backup connection in case the main hitch fails. They must be crossed under the trailer tongue in an “X” pattern and attached securely to the tow vehicle’s frame or receiver. The chains should have enough slack to allow for sharp turns but not so much that they drag on the ground.
- Lights: The trailer’s electrical system must be connected to the tow vehicle so that its lights work in sync with the vehicle’s lights. This includes functioning brake lights, taillights, and turn signals. The connection plug must be clean and secure.
- Trailer Brakes: In Virginia, a trailer must be equipped with its own braking system if its gross weight is 3,000 pounds or more. These brakes are typically activated by an electronic brake controller in the tow vehicle or by a surge mechanism on the trailer itself.
