Chapter 12: Towing a Trailer

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

Towing a trailer transforms a vehicle’s handling, braking, and stability, introducing a new set of challenges and risks for the driver. Understanding the principles of proper loading, the function of required safety equipment, and the techniques for maneuvering a combined vehicle is not just a matter of convenience, but a critical safety responsibility. Mastering these skills is essential for preventing dangerous situations like trailer sway, ensuring you can stop safely, and protecting yourself and others on the road.

Equipment and Loading

Before towing, a driver must ensure the vehicle and trailer are properly equipped and loaded. An improperly equipped or loaded trailer is a significant safety hazard that can lead to a complete loss of control.

Required Equipment

  • Hitch: The hitch must be rated for the gross weight of the trailer. The ball on the hitch must match the size of the trailer’s coupler. An improperly matched or underrated hitch can fail under stress.
  • Safety Chains: Two strong safety chains are required to connect the trailer to the towing vehicle. They must be crisscrossed under the trailer tongue in an “X” pattern. This prevents the tongue from dropping to the pavement and creating a “cradle” if the primary hitch fails. The chains should have enough slack to allow for sharp turns but not so much that they drag on the ground.
  • Lights: The trailer must have functional taillights, brake lights, and turn signals that are synchronized with the tow vehicle’s lights. A wiring harness connects the two systems. Before every trip, a driver should perform a walk-around check to ensure all lights are working correctly.
  • Trailer Brakes: In Texas, a trailer must be equipped with its own braking system if its gross weight is 4,500 lbs or more. These brakes are typically activated electronically by a controller in the tow vehicle’s cab and are crucial for safe stopping.
