Chapter 3: Parking Rules

Properly parking a vehicle is a fundamental skill that ensures safety for everyone, including pedestrians, emergency responders, and other drivers. Knowing where, when, and how to park legally prevents collisions, ensures the smooth flow of traffic, and guarantees that crucial access points like fire hydrants and crosswalks remain clear. Mastering these rules is essential for passing the road test and for being a responsible member of the driving community.

General Parking Rules

Parking is more than just stopping the car; it involves a sequence of actions to ensure the vehicle is safe and secure. These rules apply whether parking for a few minutes or several hours.

Securing the Vehicle

After stopping in a legal parking space, a driver must properly secure the vehicle to prevent it from moving.

1. Set the Parking Brake: Always set the parking brake firmly. This provides a mechanical lock on the wheels and is the primary defense against the vehicle rolling, especially on an incline.
2. Place the Vehicle in Gear: For automatic transmissions, shift to “Park.” For manual transmissions, shift into “Reverse” if facing downhill or “First” gear if facing uphill.
3. Turn Off the Engine and Remove the Key: This prevents unauthorized use and carbon monoxide buildup. Always lock the doors after exiting.
4. Check for Traffic: Before opening the door, check mirrors and look over your shoulder for passing vehicles, bicyclists, or pedestrians. Exit carefully to avoid a collision.
