Chapter 8: Sharing the Road

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

Roadways are shared spaces used by a diverse mix of vehicles and people, from pedestrians and bicyclists to large commercial trucks and emergency vehicles. As a driver of a passenger car, you have a significant responsibility to be aware of and protect these other road users, many of whom are more vulnerable. Understanding the specific rules for interacting with each group is a cornerstone of defensive driving, critical for passing the driver’s test, and essential for preventing serious injuries and fatalities.

Sharing the road means actively looking for and applying specific rules of conduct when encountering different types of road users. It involves recognizing that bicyclists have a right to the road, pedestrians have the right-of-way in crosswalks, and large trucks have physical limitations that require extra space. Adhering to these principles creates a safer and more predictable environment for everyone.

Pedestrians and Bicyclists

These individuals are considered vulnerable road users because they lack the protection of a motor vehicle. Drivers must always be alert and prepared to yield to them.

Pedestrians

A driver’s responsibility to pedestrians is paramount.

  • Crosswalks: You must stop and remain stopped for a pedestrian who is crossing in a marked or unmarked crosswalk if the pedestrian is in your lane of travel or the lane next to yours (including a bike lane). Every intersection is considered a crosswalk, even if it is not marked with painted lines. Do not pass a vehicle that is stopped at a crosswalk, as they are likely waiting for a pedestrian to cross.
  • Blind Pedestrians: You must give the right-of-way to any pedestrian who is blind or has limited vision and is carrying a white cane or using a guide dog. You must remain stopped until the person has crossed the entire roadway, even if you have a green light.
