9. → Emergencies & Legal Responsibilities
Knowing how to react during a vehicle malfunction or a traffic collision is a critical driving skill that can mean the difference between a minor inconvenience and a major tragedy. Equally important is understanding your legal duties when interacting with law enforcement or after a crash. This knowledge ensures you can handle stressful situations safely, legally, and responsibly, protecting both your well-being and your driving privileges.
Vehicle Malfunctions
Even well-maintained vehicles can experience sudden mechanical failures. Knowing the correct response can help a driver maintain control and bring the vehicle to a safe stop.
Tire Blowout
A blowout is a rapid loss of air pressure in a tire, which can cause the vehicle to pull sharply to one side.
- Grip the Steering Wheel Firmly: Hold the wheel with both hands to counteract the pull and maintain a straight course.
- Do Not Brake: Avoid the instinct to slam on the brakes. Hard braking can lock the wheels and cause a complete loss of control.
- Ease Off the Accelerator: Gradually release the gas pedal to allow the vehicle to slow down on its own.
- Pull Over Safely: Once the vehicle has slowed to a manageable speed, signal, and steer to a safe location off the roadway.
Common Mistake:
The most dangerous reaction to a tire blowout is slamming on the brakes. This transfers the vehicle’s weight and can cause it to spin or flip. The correct response is to focus on steering and gradual deceleration.
