Chapter 10: Your Vehicle

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

A driver is only as safe as the vehicle they operate. Ensuring your car is legally titled, registered, insured, and equipped with functioning safety features is a fundamental legal responsibility. This knowledge is essential for avoiding fines and license suspension, passing the vehicle inspection portion of the road test, and preventing equipment failure that could lead to a serious crash.

Title, Registration, and Insurance

Before a vehicle can be legally driven on Alabama roads, the owner must address three key legal requirements: title, registration, and insurance.

Vehicle Title vs. Registration

  • Title: A vehicle title is a legal document that proves ownership. You receive it when you purchase a vehicle. It is a critical document that must be stored in a safe place—not in the vehicle itself. You will need the title to sell the car or to register it in your name for the first time.
  • Registration: A vehicle registration is the process of officially recording the vehicle with the state, which grants permission for it to be operated on public roads. In Alabama, you must register your vehicle within 20 days of purchase or of becoming a resident. Registration must be renewed annually, and the registration card should be kept in the vehicle at all times.
  • License Plates: Upon registering your vehicle, you will be issued a license plate, which must be securely fastened to the rear of the vehicle. The plate must be kept clean and clearly legible, and it must be illuminated by a white light at night.

Pro-Tip:
Keep your registration and proof of insurance in your vehicle’s glove compartment. However, never store the vehicle’s title in the car. If the car is stolen, the thief would have proof of ownership, making it easier for them to sell.
