Speed Limits
The cornerstone of speed regulation is the Basic Speed Law, which requires you to drive at a speed that is “reasonable and prudent” for the current conditions, regardless of the posted limit. You must slow down for adverse weather, traffic, poor visibility, or bad road conditions.
Posted speed limits are maximums under ideal circumstances. Statutory limits apply when no sign is posted: 70 mph on interstates, 55 mph on most other roads, and 15 mph in school zones when children are present. Driving too slowly and impeding traffic is also illegal.
