Towing a Trailer
For safe towing, your vehicle needs a proper hitch, crossed safety chains, and potentially trailer brakes and extended side mirrors. Load the trailer with about 60% of the weight in the front half to prevent swaying. Before driving, ensure the trailer is securely coupled, lights are working, and the tongue jack is raised.
Towing requires adjusted driving techniques. Allow for much greater stopping distance and take wider turns. Backing up is challenging; steer the opposite direction you want the trailer to go. Be prepared for crosswinds, and if the trailer sways, ease off the accelerator—do not brake—until it stabilizes.
