The Basic Speed Law in Louisiana

The Basic Speed Law requires you to never drive faster than what is “reasonable and prudent” for the current conditions. This means you must slow down below the posted limit in situations like bad weather, heavy traffic, or poor visibility, even if you are technically under the maximum speed limit.

A driver can be cited for violating this law regardless of their speed if their driving is deemed unsafe for the conditions. It is your legal responsibility to adjust your speed to match the road, traffic, and weather.
