Safe Driving Practices
To prevent collisions, Kansas recommends maintaining a safe following distance. Under normal conditions, use the “two-second rule” by picking a fixed object and ensuring two seconds pass before your vehicle reaches it after the car ahead has passed it.
In adverse weather like rain or snow, this should be increased to four seconds. Drivers should maintain a “visual lead” by scanning the road 20 to 30 seconds ahead to identify hazards early. It is also critical to check blind spots by turning your head before changing lanes, as mirrors cannot see everything. Distracted driving, particularly texting while driving, is prohibited to ensure drivers keep their full attention on the road.
