School Buses and Emergency Vehicles

Iowa law is very strict regarding school buses to protect children. When a school bus stops and activates its flashing red lights and stop arm, drivers approaching from both the front and rear must stop at least 15 feet away. You must remain stopped until the stop arm is retracted and the bus begins to move.

The only exception to the school bus stopping rule is for drivers on the opposite side of a roadway that has four or more lanes. In this specific case, oncoming traffic does not need to stop but should proceed with caution. Violating school bus stopping laws can result in a license suspension of up to 30 days.

Iowa’s “Move Over or Slow Down” law protects roadside workers and emergency personnel. When approaching a stationary vehicle with flashing lights—such as a police car, tow truck, or utility vehicle—you must change lanes to a lane not adjacent to the stopped vehicle. If a lane change is impossible or unsafe, you must slow down to a reasonable speed and be prepared to stop.
