Traffic Signs, Signals, and Markings

Traffic signs use specific shapes and colors to quickly convey meaning. An octagon is always a STOP sign, a triangle is a YIELD, a diamond is a warning, and a rectangle is regulatory or guide information. Colors are also key: red for stop/prohibit, yellow for warning, white for regulatory, and orange for work zones.

Pavement markings also provide critical guidance. Yellow lines separate opposing traffic; a broken yellow line allows passing when safe, while a solid yellow line prohibits it. White lines separate lanes moving in the same direction; a broken white line allows lane changes, and a solid white line means you should not cross it.
