Speed Limits

Colorado’s Basic Speed Law requires you to always drive at a speed that is reasonable and prudent for current conditions, regardless of the posted limit. You must reduce your speed for hazards like bad weather, heavy traffic, pedestrians, poor visibility, or sharp curves.

The state’s statutory speed limits are 20 mph on narrow mountain roads, 25 mph in business districts, 30 mph in residential areas, 55 mph on open highways, 65 mph on four-lane interstates, and up to 75 mph on designated highways. Driving too slowly and impeding traffic is also illegal.
