Chapter 10: Your Vehicle

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

Ensuring your vehicle is legally titled, registered, insured, and equipped with functioning safety features is a fundamental responsibility of ownership. These requirements are not just administrative hurdles; they are designed to establish clear ownership, provide financial protection in the event of a crash, and guarantee that every car on the road meets a minimum standard of safety. Adhering to these laws is essential for legal operation, personal safety, and the safety of everyone you share the road with.

Title, Registration, and Insurance

Properly managing your vehicle’s legal documentation is a critical aspect of responsible car ownership.

  • Vehicle Title: The Certificate of Title is the legal document that proves you own the vehicle. It is a secure document that lists the owner’s name, the vehicle identification number (VIN), and any lienholders (such as a bank that financed the car). You must apply for a title in your name within a specified period after purchasing a vehicle.
  • Vehicle Registration: Registration is the process of officially recording your vehicle with the state, which allows it to be legally driven on public roads. In Colorado, you must register your vehicle within 60 days of purchase. Registration must be renewed annually, and you will receive new stickers to place on your license plates as proof of current registration.
  • License Plates: Colorado requires most vehicles to display two license plates: one on the front and one on the rear. Both plates must be securely fastened, clean, and clearly visible at all times.
