School Buses and Emergency Protocols

Kansas law requires strict adherence to school bus safety. You must stop for a school bus that is displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, regardless of whether you are behind the bus or approaching from the opposite direction. You must remain stopped until the lights are off and the stop arm is retracted. The only exception is if you are on the opposite side of a divided highway separated by a physical median.

Additionally, the Kansas “Move Over” law requires drivers approaching stationary emergency or maintenance vehicles with flashing lights to move to a lane away from the vehicle. If changing lanes is impossible, you must significantly reduce your speed and proceed with caution.
