General Parking Rules

When parking, always set the parking brake, place an automatic transmission in “park,” and turn off the engine. Before opening your door, check for passing traffic, bicycles, and motorcycles to ensure it is safe.

If your vehicle has a manual transmission, leave it in gear when parked. Always remove the key from the ignition to prevent theft or accidental movement.

Parking on a Hill

When parking on a hill, properly positioning your wheels is crucial to prevent rolling. Headed uphill with a curb, turn wheels away from the curb. Headed downhill, turn wheels toward the curb.

If there is no curb, whether headed uphill or downhill, always turn your front wheels toward the side of the road. This will steer the vehicle away from traffic if it begins to roll.

“No Parking” Zones in California

You must never park on a crosswalk, within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, or in front of a driveway. Parking is also prohibited on bridges, overpasses, in tunnels, or on railroad tracks.

Other no-parking zones include areas with posted signs, the wrong side of the street, spaces for zero-emission vehicles (unless you drive one), and freeways except in emergencies. Double parking is always illegal.
