Obtaining a Driver License in Washington

Washington residents must have a valid driver license to operate a vehicle on public roadways. Teens can apply for an instruction permit at age 15-1/2, or age 15 if enrolled in an approved driver-training course. To obtain an intermediate license, drivers between 16 and 17 must hold a permit for six months and pass a traffic safety course. Intermediate license holders cannot drive between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. For the first six months, they are not allowed to carry passengers under age 20 except for immediate family members. Adults 18 and older must pass a medical screening, vision check, knowledge test, and driving skills test. Once issued, a standard Washington driver license is valid for up to six years.
