New Hampshire GDL Program

New Hampshire’s Youth Operator program is a multi-stage process for new drivers under 18. It begins at age 15 ½ with a learner stage, where driving is only permitted under the supervision of a licensed driver who is at least 25. To get a license at 16, you must complete 40 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night) and a state-approved driver education course.

Once you turn 16 and pass the tests, you receive a Youth Operator License with restrictions. For the first six months, you cannot drive between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. and can only carry one non-family passenger under 25. The passenger restriction lifts after six months, but the nighttime curfew remains until you turn 18, when you become eligible for a full, unrestricted license.
