Colorado GDL Program for Minor Drivers

The GDL program is a multi-stage process for drivers under 18. It begins with a learner’s permit, which must be held for 12 months and requires a logged 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night. Drivers under 16.5 must also complete 6 hours of professional behind-the-wheel training, unless no certified school is within 30 miles, in which case 12 additional supervised hours are needed.

After the permit phase, a minor can get a provisional license with strict passenger limits and a ban on cell phone use. Once all GDL requirements are met and the driver turns 18, they are eligible for a full, unrestricted license.
