CDL Doubles and Triples Practice Tests

While CDL standards are federal, the actual exam questions may vary slightly from state to state.

Coupling Methods, Stability & Multi-Trailer Handling Topics

Pulling two or three trailers drastically affects vehicle stability and braking response. This section prepares you to handle the dangerous “crack-the-whip” effect, properly connect converter dollies, and manage the extra length of your rig safely in 2026. We offer 4 focused exams to certify your skills. Each test runs on a concentrated pool of 40 essential questions. Every session generates 20 random scenarios, and you must answer 16 correctly to pass.

Doubles/Triples Exam 1

Stability & “Crack-the-Whip”. The rear trailer is the most dangerous. Learn why quick steering movements can flip the last trailer and how to drive smoothly to prevent rollovers.

Doubles/Triples Exam 2

Coupling & The Dolly. Connecting multiple trailers is complex. Master the rules for positioning the converter dolly, securing the pintle hook, and connecting safety chains.

Doubles/Triples Exam 3

Air Brakes & Valves. Crucial for safety. Tests your knowledge on checking shut-off valves at the rear of each trailer to ensure air flows through the entire train.

Passing the Doubles and Triples Endorsement: 2026 Roadmap

For experienced drivers looking to maximize their hauling capacity and earning potential, the Doubles and Triples (T) endorsement is a valuable asset. This certification allows you to pull two or three trailers at once (Long Combination Vehicles or LCVs). The written test is rigorous because these vehicles are inherently less stable and require advanced handling skills.

1. The “T” Endorsement Breakdown

The main challenge with multiple trailers is stability. The exam tests your knowledge of how to keep the rear trailers under control.

  • Number of Questions: The test typically consists of 20 multiple-choice questions.
  • Passing Score: You must answer at least 16 questions correctly (80%) to pass.
  • Prerequisites: You must hold a Class A CDL. Note that triple trailers are not legal in all states, so check your local regulations.

2. Critical LCV Skills

The exam focuses heavily on the physics of towing multiple articulation points. You must master:

  • Coupling Sequence: The most technical part of the exam. You must know the specific order: connect the lead trailer -> connect the converter dolly -> connect the rear trailer.
  • “Crack the Whip” Effect: This is the tendency for the rear trailer to swing out wildly with even slight movements of the tractor. The last trailer is the most dangerous; a 1-foot movement at the front can cause a 5-foot swing at the back.
  • Weight Distribution: The heaviest trailer must always be in the front (closest to the tractor), and the lightest in the rear, to prevent instability.
  • Braking & Steering: You must manage significantly increased stopping distances and a wider turning radius. You must also know to use the trailer hand valve only for testing, never for braking while driving (which causes jackknifing).

3. Strategic Preparation

The Doubles and Triples test requires you to visualize complex coupling procedures that you may not have seen in real life yet.

  • Visualize the Order: Practice tests help you memorize the exact sequence of “converter dolly” connections so you don’t mix up the steps.
  • Understand the Risks: Questions will test your knowledge on rollovers (LCVs are more prone to them) and looking far ahead (12-15 seconds) to avoid sudden steering changes.
  • Confidence: By testing your knowledge beforehand, you can approach the official exam with the assurance that you know the material inside and out.
