CDL Tanker Practice Tests

While CDL standards are federal, the actual exam questions may vary slightly from state to state.

Liquid Surge, Vehicle Control & Tanker Safety Concepts

Tankers are the most unstable vehicles on the road due to their high center of gravity and liquid movement. This section explains how to handle “liquid surge,” the difference between baffled and unbaffled tanks, and safe stopping distances for 2026. We offer 3 focused exams to help you master this endorsement. Each test draws from a specialized pool of 46 questions. Your session will display 20 random scenarios, requiring 16 correct answers to pass.

Tanker Exam 1

Liquid Surge & Stability. Understand the most dangerous force in a tanker. Learn how “liquid surge” pushes your truck forward when stopping and sideways when turning, and how to prevent rollovers.

Tanker Exam 2

Tank Structures. Not all tanks are the same. Test your knowledge on bulkheads, baffled tanks, and “smooth bore” tanks (like milk tankers) that have no internal support against surge.

Tanker Exam 3

Emergency Operations. Stopping and turning safely. Includes questions on outage (expansion space), checking for leaks, and managing skids on wet or icy roads with a shifting load.

Mastering the Tanker Vehicles Endorsement: 2026 Exam Overview

Hauling liquids or gases requires a specific set of skills due to the way these loads affect vehicle handling. The Tanker endorsement (N) is mandatory for drivers who want to transport large quantities of liquids or gases. The written test assesses your understanding of fluid dynamics, vehicle stability, and safe driving techniques.

1. The Exam Structure

Driving a tanker is fundamentally different from pulling a dry van because the load is “live”—it moves.

  • Number of Questions: The test typically consists of 20 multiple-choice questions.
  • Passing Score: You must answer at least 16 questions correctly (80%) to pass.
  • Prerequisites: You must already hold (or be applying for) a Class A or Class B CDL.

2. Critical Topics to Master

The exam focuses on how to manage the unique physics of a liquid load to prevent rollovers and accidents.

  • Liquid Surge: This is the movement of liquid inside a partially filled tank. When you stop, the liquid rushes forward, pushing the truck. You must know how to use controlled or stab braking to manage this.
  • Baffles vs. Smooth Bore:
    • Baffled Tanks: Have internal walls with holes to control forward-and-back surge.
    • Unbaffled (Smooth Bore) Tanks: Used for food products (like milk) to allow for cleaning. These have strong surge and require extreme caution.
  • Outage: The empty space you must leave in a tank to allow for liquid expansion as it warms up.
  • Center of Gravity: Tankers have a high center of gravity, making them highly prone to rollovers on curves. You must drive well below the posted speed limit on ramps.

3. Why Practice is Crucial

The concepts of surge and outage can be tricky to grasp just by reading the manual.

  • Visualize the Physics: Practice tests help you visualize scenarios, such as why you shouldn’t use the trailer brake to stop a jackknife when the tank is empty.
  • Terminology: You will get used to specific terms like “bulkheads” and “liquid expansion” so you aren’t confused on test day.
  • Safety Adjustments: Questions will test your knowledge on adjusting following distances and braking techniques specifically for liquid loads.
