Getting Your West Virginia Driver’s License: The 2026 Roadmap
Taking the first step toward getting your driver’s license in the Mountain State is a big milestone. The process at the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is straightforward, but for teens, it involves a specific “Graduated Driver’s License” (GDL) path. This roadmap breaks down the official rules so you can get your permit and hit the road.
1. The Instruction Permit (Level 1)
Your journey begins at age 15. You must pass the written knowledge test to receive your Level 1 GDL permit.
- The Exam: The test consists of 25 questions covering traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices.
- Passing Score: You must answer at least 19 questions correctly (76%) to pass.
- Validity: This permit allows you to practice driving while accompanied by a licensed adult (21+) in the front seat.
2. Required Documents Checklist
You must bring original documents to the DMV.
- Proof of Identity: (e.g., Certified U.S. Birth Certificate or valid Passport).
- Social Security Number: (e.g., Original Social Security Card or W-2 form).
- Residency: Two documents showing your name and West Virginia physical address (e.g., utility bill, bank statement).
- School Attendance: If under 18, you must present a valid School Driver Eligibility Certificate to prove you are enrolled and meeting attendance requirements.
3. Rules for Drivers Under 18
West Virginia’s Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) program ensures you gain experience safely before driving solo.
- Holding Period: You must hold your Level 1 permit for at least 6 months conviction-free.
- Practice Hours: You must log 50 hours of supervised driving, with at least 10 hours completed at night.
- Curfew: You may not drive between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM.
- Passenger Limit: You are limited to two non-family passengers in addition to your supervising adult.
