Chapter 3: Parking Rules

Knowing how to park a vehicle legally and safely is a critical driving skill that is often overlooked. Proper parking ensures that traffic can flow smoothly, emergency vehicles have clear access, and pedestrians can use sidewalks and crosswalks without obstruction. Mastering these rules is not only essential for passing the road test but also for being a responsible driver who contributes to public safety and avoids expensive fines and towing fees.

General Parking Rules

Whenever a driver parks a vehicle, they are responsible for ensuring it is stationary, secure, and not a hazard to other road users. This involves a sequence of steps that should become a habit.

Securing the Vehicle

Before leaving a parked vehicle, a driver must follow these steps to ensure it will not move:

1. Set the Parking Brake: Always engage the parking brake firmly. This provides a mechanical lock on the wheels that is separate from the transmission and is the most critical step in securing the vehicle.
2. Place the Vehicle in Gear: For an automatic transmission, place the gear selector in “Park.” For a manual transmission, shift into reverse gear if facing downhill or first gear if facing uphill.
3. Turn Off the Engine and Remove the Key: Never leave a vehicle running and unattended.
4. Lock the Doors: Secure the vehicle and its contents by locking all doors.

Parking on a Hill

When parking on a grade, a driver must turn the front wheels in a specific direction as a safety precaution. If the brakes or transmission were to fail, this technique directs the car to roll into the curb or off the road, rather than into moving traffic.
