Safe Driving Practices
Defensive driving involves maintaining a safe “space cushion” around your vehicle. Use the three-second following rule: pick a fixed object, and when the car ahead passes it, count three seconds. If you pass the object before you finish counting, you are following too closely. Increase this distance to four or more seconds in bad weather.
Distracted driving is a major hazard and includes visual, manual, and cognitive distractions. In New Jersey, using a hand-held cell phone for talking or texting is a primary offense with significant fines. Driving while fatigued is also dangerous; if you feel drowsy, pull over to a safe location to rest.
