Parking Regulations and Restrictions
When parking on a roadway, you must ensure your vehicle does not become a hazard to other traffic. If a curb is present, Iowa law requires you to park your vehicle within 18 inches of the curb. If you must park on a roadway without a curb, you should position your vehicle as far away from traffic as possible to ensure safety.
There are specific areas where parking is strictly prohibited to maintain traffic flow and safety. You may not park on a crosswalk, on a sidewalk, in front of a public or private driveway, or within an intersection. Additionally, parking is illegal within five feet of a fire hydrant, ten feet of a stop sign, and fifty feet of a railroad crossing.
Always exercise caution when exiting your parked vehicle. You must check for oncoming traffic, including bicyclists, before opening your door. It is recommended to get out of the vehicle on the curb side whenever necessary to avoid stepping into the path of moving vehicles.
