Obtaining a Kansas Driver License
Kansas employs a Graduated Driver’s Licensing (GDL) system designed to introduce driving privileges in stages. Teenagers can begin with a Farm Permit at age 14 or an Instructional Permit at age 14, provided they pass the vision and written tests. At age 15, drivers who have held a permit for a year and completed driver’s education can apply for a Restricted License, which allows driving to school or work but prohibits minor passengers. By age 16, drivers may qualify for a Less Restricted License if they have completed 50 hours of practice driving, including 10 hours at night.
A full Unrestricted License is available at age 17. All applicants must pass a vision screening (20/40 acuity required) and a written knowledge exam covering traffic laws and signs. New residents moving to the state must transfer their out-of-state license to a Kansas Driver License within 90 days of establishing residency.
