제 9 장: 비상 상황 및 법적 책임

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

Even the most careful driver can face an unexpected crisis on the road, from a sudden vehicle malfunction to the unfortunate reality of a collision. Knowing how to react calmly and correctly in these high-stress situations is a critical driving skill that can prevent further damage, reduce injuries, and ensure you meet your legal obligations. This knowledge is essential for the driver’s test, which evaluates your understanding of these procedures, and for navigating the real-world challenges of driving safely and responsibly.

This chapter covers the proper response to common vehicle emergencies, the legal duties required after a collision, and the correct procedure to follow during a traffic stop. Mastering these protocols helps a driver maintain control, protect themselves and others, and interact with law enforcement in a safe and respectful manner.

Vehicle Malfunctions

A sudden mechanical failure can be frightening, but a prepared driver can often navigate the situation safely. The key is to avoid panic and follow established procedures.

A diagram shows the rear view of a vehicle with a driver using hand signals to indicate a left turn, a right turn, and a stop or slow down.

Tire Blowout

A sudden loss of tire pressure will cause the vehicle to pull sharply in the direction of the failed tire.

  1. Do not brake. Slamming the brakes is the most dangerous reaction and can cause a complete loss of control.
  2. Grip the steering wheel firmly with both hands to keep the vehicle moving straight.
  3. Ease your foot off the accelerator and allow the vehicle to slow down gradually.
  4. Once the vehicle has slowed to a safe, controllable speed, activate your turn signal and pull completely off the road to a safe location.

Brake Failure

If the brake pedal suddenly goes to the floor with no resistance:

  1. Pump the brake pedal quickly and repeatedly. This may build up enough hydraulic pressure to activate the brakes.
  2. If pumping fails, slowly and steadily apply the parking brake. Be ready to release it if the rear wheels lock and the vehicle begins to skid.
  3. Shift to a lower gear. This will use the engine’s compression to help slow the vehicle.
  4. As a last resort, steer into an open area or scrape the vehicle’s side against a curb or guardrail to scrub off speed.
