제 2 장: 속도 제한

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

Controlling a vehicle’s speed is one of the most critical responsibilities a driver has, directly impacting safety, fuel economy, and the ability to react to unexpected hazards. Understanding Montana’s speed laws is crucial for both the written exam and real-world driving, as it involves more than just reading a posted sign. This knowledge helps drivers make safe, legal, and appropriate decisions based on their environment, protecting themselves, their passengers, and others on the road.

Montana’s laws on speed are designed to ensure traffic moves at a rate that is safe and reasonable for current conditions. These laws include a fundamental principle that applies everywhere, as well as specific numerical limits for different types of roads. Violating these laws is a common cause of traffic citations and contributes significantly to the severity of crashes.

The Basic Speed Law

The most important speed rule in Montana is the Basic Speed Law. This law requires that a driver operate their vehicle at a speed that is “reasonable and prudent” under the existing conditions. This means a driver must consider all factors that could affect their ability to control the vehicle and stop safely. The number on a speed limit sign is the maximum legal speed for that road only during ideal conditions—a clear, dry day with light traffic.

Factors that require a driver to reduce their speed below the posted limit include:

  • Weather: Rain, snow, sleet, or ice dramatically increases stopping distance. A driver must slow down to maintain control.
  • Visibility: Fog, heavy rain, smoke, or darkness reduces how far a driver can see ahead. The speed must be low enough to allow a stop within the visible distance.
  • Traffic: In heavy traffic, a driver must slow down to maintain a safe following distance and react to the unpredictable actions of other vehicles.
  • Road Conditions: A driver must slow down for sharp curves, narrow roads, gravel surfaces, or roads in poor repair.
