Chapter 9: Emergencies & Legal Responsibilities

Even the most careful drivers can face unexpected situations, from sudden vehicle malfunctions to being involved in a collision. Knowing how to react calmly and correctly in an emergency can prevent a bad situation from becoming a tragedy. Understanding your legal duties after a crash or during a traffic stop is equally critical for protecting yourself and adhering to the law, and this knowledge is a key part of your responsibility as a licensed driver.

Vehicle Malfunctions

A sudden mechanical failure can be frightening, but a prepared driver can maintain control and bring the vehicle to a safe stop.

Tire Blowout

A blowout is a rapid loss of air pressure in a tire, causing the vehicle to pull sharply to one side.

1. Grip the Steering Wheel Firmly: Your immediate priority is to maintain control. Do not let the wheel jerk out of your hands.
2. Do Not Slam the Brakes: Braking hard can cause the vehicle to spin out of control.
3. Ease Off the Accelerator: Allow the vehicle to slow down gradually.
4. Pull Over Safely: Once you have slowed to a manageable speed, find a safe place to pull completely off the road. Activate your emergency flashers.
